The Ikigai Compass

Western career advice asks, "What is your passion?" This is incomplete. Passion does not pay the rent. The Japanese concept of Ikigai (Reason for Being) requires four pillars to stand.

Use the compass below to audit your current career path.

Career Audit Variables:
1. Do you LOVE it?
NO
2. Are you GOOD at it?
NO
3. Does the world NEED it?
NO
4. Can you be PAID for it?
NO

The 4 Zones of Existence

Most people are stuck in a sub-optimal zone. If you have Passion and Skill but no Money, you have a Hobby. If you have Money and Skill but no Passion, you have a Job.

True Ikigai is the rare center where all four circles overlap. It is sustainable, fulfilling, and profitable. Do not settle for 3 out of 4.

System Notes

What if I don't know my passion?

Passion is not found; it is cultivated. Start with "Curiosity." What do you read about on Saturday mornings? Start there.

Can Ikigai change over time?

Yes. Your Ikigai at 20 is different from your Ikigai at 50. It is a dynamic equilibrium, not a static destination.
